Bathing in the wild, wild west

In Lumberton, we've been eight miserable days without water. Dulce, the town down the road, not only has water, it has a laundromat with showers!

Why don't you have water?

in a nutshell, the system is old and the people who service it are volunteers. there are known leaks in the distribution pipes, plus there is always suspicion that people are tapping in for irrigation.

lumberton is in the middle of nowhere and consists of only around 200 households. even if there was money to pay experts who service water systems, they would be reluctant to settle in here long enough to fix things.

anyway, a big leak was located and repaired last week and the taps are flowing again.

i should add that living without water (a) is a sobering lesson in how quickly life becomes unbearable without it, (b) provides opportunities for learning all kinds of survival techniques, and (c) becomes normal after a few days.
